Yam is an herbaceous plant that belongs to the tuber family. This food is rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber. According to some scientific studies, its consumption may offer health benefits.
There are several ways to prepare this tuber: it can be fried, boiled, or steamed. It can also be incorporated into dishes such as yam and cheese soup, mote, puree, consommé, or other sweet and savory recipes.
In addition to its exquisite taste and high fiber content, Yam is an excellent source of potassium and manganese. According to research from Vanderbilt University, these minerals may support bone health, growth, metabolism, and heart function.
Another key component is copper, which is vital for red blood cell production and iron absorption, along with vitamin C, an antioxidant that can stimulate the immune system.
«In a study, mice that received wild Yam extract daily for 90 days showed a decrease in inflammation and, at higher doses, in pain levels,» the report explains.
Furthermore, Yam may improve memory and other brain functions. Research published in the scientific journal Nutrition found that individuals who consumed this tuber scored higher on a cognitive function test.
«The neuroprotective profile of diosgenin provides efficacy against diabetes-induced neuropathy and ischemic brain injury, while also possessing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capabilities, in addition to improving cognitive deficits,» explains the journal Frontiers regarding this key component for brain health.
