It is a commercial phenomenon on social media.
«I’m Julio, a Yam grower and farmer from Montes de María. I’m Remberto…, and I’m Rosa. We are Yam growers and we have a large harvest. In Montes de María, there are 4,000 hectares of Yam that need buyers. That’s why we became YouTubers so this Yam can be sold. We want to invite you to consume Yam to support the farmers. Help us make sure this Yam doesn’t go to waste. Yam is good for arthritis. Yam helps control menopause. Yam regulates and prevents constipation. My dad was told to eat Yam to get calcium in his bones. It helps reduce cramps.»
This is the message from a video posted by a group of eight farmers from Montes de María, who decided to use social media to share the challenges they face in selling their harvest. The invitation ends with a chorus that says: “Everyone eat Yam!”
Although the video was recorded by a journalist, the main protagonists are the people affected by the price crisis of this typical food from Colombia’s Caribbean coast.
The original message had only about 1,000 views as of yesterday at 5:00 PM, but it went viral after being supported by journalist and YouTuber Daniel Samper Ospina, who recorded another video backing the farmers, calling it “The Yam Challenge.” Last night, at the time of this report, Samper’s video was approaching 60,000 views.
